San Antonio was the goal all season long for the Flyers and they didn’t waiver getting the automatic bid by winning the Conference Championship two weeks ago.
The Flyers would be the number five seed in the eight man single elimination tournament for the WBCBL National Championship.
First up was the Georgia Soul on Saturday afternoon. Georgia gave the Flyers a battle for three quarters leading the way. In the fourth Flyers Head
Coach Brittney Koch-Dowell’s squad pulled away for a convincing 85-66 victory.
“Our depth was key,” said Koch-Dowell.
Later that evening the Flyers would face the number one team in the tournament the San Antonio Crusaders.
Heat and exhaustion made for an ugly game for both teams as players from both squads suffered cramp injuries. The Flyers held on to an 80-66 win to advance to the Championship game on Sunday.
On Sunday the Flyers and the St. Louis Surge would square off for the National Championship. This was the fourth time these two teams battled this year. The Surge had a 2-1 advantage.
St. Louis jumped out to an early lead, however the Flyers closed the gap and by halftime were only down by two points.
“I told the girls we are going get our second wind, just hang in there,” said Koch-Dowell.
They did, however the Surge pulled away in the second half to capture the title with a 69-55.
“I am so proud of this team. We put this program together in a short time and to be playing for a National title in the first year is impressive,” said Koch-Dowell. “We’re not done. We will be back next year.”
Koch-Dowell also wanted to thank the overwhelming support from their fans this year.
“The support we received was unbelievable,” said Koch-Dowell. “We can’t thank everyone enough.”
